The Long Road

“The Long Road” is the song that I chose to kick off this new album, and for good reason as I think it sets the tone both musically and lyrically for what the listener is going to hear on the rest of the tracks. This song was actually the first new song I wrote after I completed “The Path of Greatest Resistance” so it’s already a few years old. Actually, most of the songs on this album are that way in that they were written a while back and it’s taken me some time to finally record them and get them out into the world.

This song was one of a couple on this album that were inspired by my wife’s sister’s husband’s (my brother-in-law) battle with brain cancer. In September of 2009 he was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer. He underwent multiple surgeries as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatments. One evening about six months into his battle I was playing guitar and had a few chords I was playing over and over again looking for a lyric to pop into my head (as I often do when writing new material) and I was thinking about his journey. Though I could never imagine what he was going through, I tried to put myself into his shoes for a moment and to consider what he was feeling as he fought this demon that he wouldn’t wish on his worst enemy.

And so the lyrics began to come to my mind and flow out as they sometimes do when a song seems to write itself. It’s almost as if I can’t write down the words fast enough. What emerged was a song written from my brother-in-law’s perspective on “the long road” that he was on and what I imagined he was feeling at the time.

It would seem that with such a personal story the song might be one dimensional. However, I feel like it turned out to be a song that anyone can relate to, especially those who might be or have in the past battled an illness, or for those who are struggling with the smaller struggles in life that we all face from time to time. And that’s what I love about music is that such a specific story can somehow produce something that transcends it and it can become something that seems like it’s meant for a larger audience.

Sadly, I never got to share this song with my brother-in-law. He passed away in September of 2010 at the age of 36 leaving behind my sister-in-law and three children. We miss him very much but keep his memory close, and we always will. Rest in peace.

Hello everyone,

Update and new song

Hello all,

Just writing to update you on a few things today.  I wanted to make sure to let everyone know that I am currently working on my next album.  I’m in the beginning stages of laying down the tracks but this one is going to be acoustic in nature, so in my  mind I’m hoping things go smoothly and it won’t take me forever to complete.  In reality, I have to be realistic and know that any recording process is a lot of work and requires substantial time commitment, especially since I’m going to once again be playing the part of producer, recording engineer, and musician all at the same time.  And we’ll probably add mixing and mastering into the list of tasks as well.

I believe I’ve got roughly 12 or 13 tracks that are going to be worked over for the album and I am extremely excited to share them with you.  As things progress I’ll be revealing the track listing and also the artwork, etc.  Once the album is complete I have a plan in mind of how I would like to reveal it.  That plan as it stands now is to reveal one track at a time and to supplement that with a blog post that discusses the stories behind the songs and the inspiration for them.  I’m hoping this will create an even stronger connection to the album and the new songs.

Thank you once again for your interest in my music and I hope you’re as excited as I am about the new songs!  To give you a taste of what I’ve been working on, I decided to record a quick video of a new song called, “The Long Road.”  When the album recording is done I’ll reveal more of the back story to the song as there definitely is one, but for now, take a listen and enjoy!

A Special Cover Video

One of the greatest things I’ve found from uploading my videos to youtube is the ability to connect with people who seemingly love and enjoy music as much as I do.  But beyond that, there are those special moments that have made the experience of sharing my music and videos something that seems like it matters.  What I’m talking about here are not only the wonderful comments that complete strangers post on a daily basis, but also those personal emails that I receive that let me know that I’m giving something back to the world.

A little while back I received one of those emails that stopped me dead in my tracks.  To be honest, I was a feeling a bit unmotivated with music and was struggling to “force” myself to keep it going.  This happens more often than I wish would be the case, but we all have our ups and downs with things in life.  But there it was sitting in my inbox; a message that I needed to see on that day.

A woman by the name of Ann wrote to me with the subject, “Please read this, will you?” and I began to make my way through the email.  The contents told the story of a friend, and asked a favor of me as well.  You see, Ann had this friend named Em who she cared about deeply.  This was more than evident by her word usage and tone throughout the message.  I could “feel” how much she cared as I read the words.

Ann told me of how Em was in an accident on her birthday a year ago and was struggling.  The exact details of the accident I’m not sure of, but her story talked of many different medical tests and medications to deal with ongoing pain.  And even though Em was strong and was fighting as hard as she could, these issues were starting to wear on her.  I felt for her as I continued on through the email.

Ann asked one thing of me; if I could dedicate a special cover song to Em for her birthday this year.  She told me that Em was a fan of mine and loved to watch my videos.  They were a source of enjoyment in a time that was otherwise filled with struggle.  She gave me three special songs to pick from to see if I could cover one of those songs for Em.  So that’s exactly what this video is and it’s dedicated to her from her friend Ann and from myself.  This is one of her favorite songs.

Em, may this bring a smile to your face and take away the pain, even if for only a moment.  Happy Late Birthday!
